How the Best Leaders Add More value to a Company

Have you ever sat down and asked yourself: what value are you providing to your organisation and how can you have a larger impact?

As leaders, it’s easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day hustle of the corporate world that we forget to ask ourselves this simple yet important question.

So often our days are consumed by meetings, back and forth emails, fighting fires, people management and driving projects forward, that little time remains to sit back and focus on the bigger picture.

However, what we should be aiming for as leaders is to focus on our highest and best use—higher-level thinking will ultimately lead to higher-level work that can truly have an impact on the organisation as a whole.

This is a sign of true leadership, as it requires you to take yourself out of the day-to-day action and think on a larger scale.

Questions higher-level thinking involve include asking yourself:

  • What can the organisation do next?
  • How can you innovate?
  • How can you grow and develop?

One of the barriers that hold leaders back from focusing on the bigger picture is the feeling that they don’t “have the time” to do so. Who will fill the void leftover if we stop focusing on day-to-day activity and start focusing on higher value work?

There is one very simple solution to this problem: delegation.

Underneath you, there might be multiple direct reports who are looking to grow and progress within the organisation. By handing over certain elements of your work to them, you free yourself up to focus on higher-value work.

Equally important, is that doing so gives your team more responsibility and opportunities to contribute at a larger scale. Remember everything is relative, and what might be ‘low-value work’ to you might be ‘high-value work’ for them.

We dive into this framework on a deeper level and identify how you can overcome the challenges associated with implementing it into your leadership style in the video below.
